48ch AAWG – High Density DWDM Mux/Demux

48ch AAWG – High Density DWDM Mux/Demux

48ch AAWG is a high-density DWDM Mux/Demux based on silica-on-silicon planar technology. It provides low insertion loss and channel isolation. It is suitable for long-haul / metro and access network applications.

AAWG offers performance comparable to standard Thermal AWG (TAWG), but does not need electrical power for stabilization. It also can be used outdoors over -30°C to +70°C in access networks.

1. High Density

Gezhi’s 48ch AAWG Mux & Demux devices are a high density, low loss and standalone passive optical module. They are based on the silica-on-silicon DWDM technology and are ideal for transporting PDH / SDH / ETHERNET services in optical metro access networks. The device offers excellent channel isolation, easy fiber handling and long-term reliability in a 1U 19” rack mount.

POINTek, a global leader and provider of high performance athermal AWGs and optical module packaging solutions, today announced the launch of Super AWGs for denser channels DWDM applications like 25GHz DWDM and industrial temperature operating environment applications of -40degC to 85degC. Conventional athermal AWGs require external power for stabilization while Super AWGs can achieve that with internal heat generation and without electrical power.

SAN DIEGO and SEOUL, March 3, 2023 – POINTek, a global leader and provider of high performance athermal AWGs (AAWG) and optical module packaging solutions, today announces the launch of a new low profile AAWG brick with 1/2 inch height housing to support the various high-density chassis frame environment of data centers. The new low profile 48ch AAWG AAWG can accommodate three thin cassettes or trays to be mounted in a 1RU chassis frame.

The low-profile AAWG can be directly replaced with traditional TFF (thin film filter) DWDM products, saving on power, space and cost. It supports ITU-T G.694.1 50GHz spacing DWDM wavelengths from C15 to H62 total 96 channels, enabling maximum capacity of the fiber access network.

2. Low Power Consumption

AWGs use the same optical circuit as a conventional silica-based planar light waveguide (PLW) device, but their active temperature stabilization requires power consumption and control devices. Moreover, their large size and high cost limit their widespread use in DWDM systems [16]. In order to reduce these limitations, POINTek has developed a new athermal AWG that does not require power for temperature stabilization.

The new athermal AWGs are based on a unique design that utilizes a thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) IC to compensate for the change in the focus point of the input slab waveguide as the temperature changes. This enables the AWGs to operate over a wide temperature range without losing performance.

This new AWG is also designed to be highly reliable, requiring no maintenance or replacement. It has been subjected to vibration, low-temperature cycling, and high-temperature storage tests, and its center wavelength shift and insertion loss variation have shown no significant differences from the initial values.

To further demonstrate the reliability of this new athermal AWG, POINTek has also performed accelerated life tests for the product. The results show that the 96-channel athermal AWG module can withstand more than 10 years of operation in harsh environments, such as those found in fiber communication networks. The accelerated life test result also confirmed that the 96-channel Network Server athermal AAWGs can be used in DWDM channels as an integrated Terminal-PD Array Demultiplexer to monitor DWDM channel quality in access network systems.

3. High Performance

The AAWG series DWDM (Arrayed Wave-guide Grating Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer) modules are fully passive DWDMs with silica-on-silicon planar technology requiring no electrical power, software or temperature control for a totally passive DWDM solution. The AAWG DWDM is compatible with both 50GHz and 100GHz channel spacing ITU grid DWDM wavelengths between 1526nm and 1565nm. Several options are available including port configuration, monitoring ports and fiber type to fit customer needs.

The DWDM AAWG is a low cost and high performance alternative to the traditional filter type DWDM Mux/DeMux for cases where no power is available. It provides very low insertion loss and high channel isolation while meeting industry standards for operation in harsh environmental conditions such as -40C to +70C.

POINTek’s AAWG brick is a 1/2-inch height module that can be plugged into the cassette or tray of a high-density rack frame in data centers. This allows the data center operator to optimize space utilization while deploying a full-bandwidth fiber management chassis frame for their customers.

Compared to standard Thermal AWG(TAWG), our AAWG does not require electricity for stability, thereby saving on cost and energy in the overall system. Furthermore, we offer a wide range of options including different input and output fibers, special metal box and 19″ 1U rack mount to meet various applications. Moreover, the AAWG DWDM is RoHS compliant and satisfies Telcordia GR-1221-CORE/UNC reliability assurance requirements for fiber optic and optoelectronic components.

4. Easy Installation

With its compact size, AAWG is easy to install in fiber management chassis frame. POINTek’s new low profile AAWG brick is just 8mm height and can be easily mounted into cassette pluggable trays or cassette modules, reducing the total system footprint for high-density frames in data centers.

The AAWG is a high-performance DWDM Mux/Demux device based on Silica-on-Silicon Planar technology. The heat-free package design eliminates the need for electrical power and temperature control, and offers high reliability, low insertion loss and excellent channel isolation. It is an ideal solution for increasing fiber capacity between two sites without requiring additional optical fiber or expensive rewiring.

AAWGs are designed to be directly replaced with traditional thin-film filters in applications where no power is available for cooling and stabilization. Their performance is comparable to standard thermal AWGs, yet they require no external power for stability, and are suitable for outdoor applications over -30 to +70°C in access networks.

In addition to 48ch AAWGs, Lightwit Photonics also provides other passive optical-layer devices including 4-96 DWDM wavelength mux/demux, optical dispersion compensation module (DCM), optical add and drop (OADMs) and splitters.
